Cape Town: A City for Everyone

Some cities are fantastic holiday destinations in themselves, whilst others serve more as a convenient entry point to access other nearby attractions. Of course, some cities fall into both categories, catering both for visitors with an aversion to moving around and for those wishing to mix things up a little by sampling all the local and not-so-local delights. Cape Town is one such city, and as one of South Africa’s principal conurbations, it literally has something for everyone. For city lovers, the bars, restaurants, shops and clubs of Long Street will keep you well watered, fed and entertained both night and day – but there’s so much more to Cape Town. Few cities can lay claim to having a national park within the city limits, whilst the brightly painted facades of the Bo-Kaap – a township on the slopes of Signal Hill – represents the colourful nature of the residents of this fine city. One of the most notable aspects of Capetonian life is the multiculturalism. Indeed, few other places on Earth can match Cape Town’s sheer diversity, with Christian, Muslim, Jewish and Hindu people living in relative harmony alongside the many other traditional African belief systems. The one immediately noticeable feature of Cape Town has to be Table Mountain, a giant flat-topped mass that forms part of the impressive Table Mountain National Park. Visitors can jump on a cable car to the top. . . or if you’re feeling fit, the two-hour hike to the top is worth the effort too. And that cake and coffee at the restaurant situated at the top will feel all the more deserved too! If you only have time to do two things in Cape Town before heading off exploring the rest of the country and continent, one should be Table Mountain. And the other has to be Robben Island. Situated seven kilometres off the coast of Cape Town, Robben Island is most famous for its prison and is where Nelson Mandela and countless other political prisoners were held captive for decades. Today, the Robben Island Museum serves as a reminder of South Africa’s apartheid and the country’s turbulent past. Visitors can even enter the cell where Mandela himself was held captive. Naturally, Cape Town hotels are always in great demand, so you are best booking ahead as far as possible. And if you’re a bit of an adventurer, there are many other attractions on your doorstep, such as the fantastic Garden Route to the east of Cape Town, whilst a short journey north will take you into Namibia where some of the world’s biggest sand dunes and best safari tours are to be found. Cape Town, as a city, has it all – whilst those wishing to spread their tourist wings and get out and about are equally well catered for. It’s certainly fair to say that Cape Town offers something for everyone.
