Exploring Marlborough Sounds – Where to Stay

Marlborough is one of the nicest places to stay in New Zealand. Perfect for a fishing trip, a romantic week away with your spouse, enjoying some of the best cuisine and wine in the world, and reconnecting with nature. Known for its picturesque views, Marlborough is the perfect place for a getaway. With so much to see and do in the region, it makes sense that you would want to spend at least a week here to truly experience everything.
Marlborough is the region that encompasses the major towns of Blenheim, Picton, Havelock, Seddon, Ward, Rai Valley, Renwick, Clarence and Clifford Bay and for those travelling between the north and south islands of New Zealand, Marlborough is often the first region they will arrive in, with the interisland ferries going between Wellington and Picton.
Picton is one of the greatest locations in the region with beautiful, waterfront views and easy access to everything the area has to offer through public transport and car hire. It’s a great idea to set Picton as home base for your week away and explore Marlborough from the comfort of the seaside town. Picton offers direct access to all the amenities you could want while away from home and in comfortable accommodation.
A lot of travellers choose the quaint town as a starting point for a journey to Marlborough Sounds. As well as offering everything to make a stay in the area comfortable, Picton also has great water access, walking tracks and local diving instructors for a really unique experience. One of the popular dives in the area is of the MS Mikhail Lermontov cruise liner wreck that now sits 37 metres underwater.
To try and create a ‘home away from home’ feel, self-contained apartments in Picton have everything you need with your comfort the priority. You don’t have to eat out at the fine restaurants in the region every night of your stay, why not pick up and home cook some of the local seafood and enjoy a nice bottle of Marlborough wine looking out over the water? These independent units are a great way to experience Marlborough Sounds. Or for times you do want to go out, places like Caf Cortado on London Quay still offer a lovely waterfront view.
Spending the week near the water also gives you easy access to plenty of popular activities. Enjoy a day on the ocean kayaking, or charter a fishing boat and spend the day trying for a great catch to cook up in the evening.
Picton serves as a gateway town between the two main New Zealand islands. After your stay in Marlborough it is easy to travel across Cook Strait to Wellington and then extend your trip to experience everything the North Island has to offer.
Don’t waste your time on a mediocre vacation. Next time you have the opportunity, explore one of the nicest places in New Zealand from the relaxing town of Picton. You won’t be disappointed.
