Montego Bay, Is it a dangerous place? Is Holiday Inn Sunspree a good and safe hotel?

I have heard a lot about Jamaica that it is not a safe place to vacation.

If you are going yo Jamaica to stay on a resort, you will be 100% safe. The part of Jamaica that you hear about with all the crime and problems is Kingston which is literally on the other side of the island from where the resorts are.

Popular resort locations are Montego Bay, Runaway Bay, Negril, and Ocho Rios.

If you stay at one of the many all-inclusive resorts on the island, there truly is nothing to worry about because there is lots of security, and locals are not allowed on the resorts. Also, if you are worried that you will run out of things to do at your resort, that really is no worry at all, there is literally something for everyone 24/7.

Holiday Inn Sunspree is a safe hotel, although it is one of the cheaper hotels to stay at. If you are interested, e-mail and I can give you suggestions on other “better” hotels that could still fit your budget.

Everywhere in the world you have good people and bad people. Overall Jamaica has the same crime rating as New York City (and other major US cities), which is a rating of high crime.

I have been told that Montego Bay is an area where you don’t want to look like a lost tourist. Typical tourist-related crimes are mainly theft and somewhat assualt. Mostly you will just be hassled by Jamaicans wanting money or selling you items.

You are safest with a tourist group and staying in an all inclusive hotel, but you don’t get to see the real Jamaica. I live in Port Antonio (which is somewhat touristy) and I haven’t experienced many problems, mostly just being verbally hassaled by guys.

Just be aware of your surroundings and try to learn the culture. For example, arguing loudly and shouting Jamaican curses is typical for most Jamaicans but dropping certain American curse words has bad reactions. Also keep up with local news issues (Jamaica Gleaner or Jamaica Observer). If there is a election or political event in the area, I do not wear the colors of the political parties (green and orange).

As with most places, use common sense.

I would go with friends. . . not alone. . . unless youre older. I just came back from vacation there on the 4th and I had a blast!!! My friends and I flew into Montego Bay and stayed in Negril. We didnt see many police, but we did find it easing to walk the street at night or go to the beach alone.

I just spent the weekend at the Holiday Inn Sunspree. . . have the pictures to prove it too.

Here is the 114 (a jamaica this)
    1. The sunspree is several miles from the heart of the town and hence the violence
    2. It is all-inclusive, so once you get there, chances are you won’t really be leaving anyway
    3. Teh hotels in Jamaica have for the most part been left alone. The violence in MoBay is now mostly centred around the lottery scam they have running there, so they have no time for a few small fry at the Holiday Inn. All their energy is being spent eliminating their scamming opponents.

Come to the Holiday Inn, the place is nice. . . . . all you can eat breakfast, lunch and dinner buffet (egg station at breakfast for your omlete and pasta station at lunch), barefoot grill after hours for burgers, fish and chips and cheese sandwiches and very shallow beach. . . . you can literally walk out a few metres from shore. Grab a pair of snorkels and check out the man made reef attached to the manmade island – lots of nice fish there.

Although there arent any police on site, the sunspree is an awesome and safe place to vacation. Have no fear just be as cautious as you would be in any other country on your first visit. stay close to familiar places and dont travel into the dark alone.
this hotel offers polynesian fire dancing at night so theres always something to be involved in thats safe.
    Have fun,
    Jill

“I mostly enjoyed my stay at the Holiday Inn Sunspree Resort. There were some items I was disappointed with. Ice machines did not work. The bed matress was very hard. The coffee maker did not work until the third day when it was replaced. ”
