I have to be in Sprinbok in June. I’m flying into Cape Town at 9:30p.m. and have to spend the night to catch a taxi/minibus the next day. I’m not overly concerned, but all of my friends and my parents are trying to convince me it’s going to be super dangerous. Now I’ll probably just exit the airport and catch a taxi to a pre-booked hotel. Then just wander around a bit the next day. I’m of the mindset that I won’t be in any danger because as a 6′3 Samoan I haven’t had any problems in American Big Cities. Should I be more concerned or are all of my friends full of it?
Also, I wear big earrings (CZ), is that going to attract a lot of attention or will I be fine leaving them in?
No. . . I don’t think anybody would try to take you on. . . unless they have a weapon. . . and exchange the big earrings for little ones. Shiny attracts unwanted begger attention which leads to dodgy and possible unsafe situations as many mugggers pose as begggers.
Also, you’ll be moving around during the day. . . so as long as you don’t get it into your mind to go down dodgy roads. . . you’ll be fine. .
As for taxi from airport. . . EXPENSIVE! meter cabs are very expensive in South Africa. Mini bus taxi’s are ok, but they only follow one route and some of them are not very reliable or honest when it comes to money.
You don’t have to wait at the airport until the next day to get to
your hotel. . . .
