This will be my last entry for the year, as I leave for the states on Saturday, arriving Monday afternoon. (boy, am I looking forward to that journey… can’t wait…) Seems like just yesterday I was typing the welcome page… I’ll keep it brief, as I have many things to do this week before my departure and very little free time to do it in. However, I wanted to drop a few pics from our trip last week to zambia/Botswana. Zambia was extraordinarily beautiful with much to see and appreciate, besides the falls of course. We toured a local village and its people, who to this day still live the traditional way. The tribe is called Leya, or tokaleya, the chief is called Mukuni, as is the village, which means “strong tree stump”. We met one of the men there who personally carves the ebony statues and crafts we see all over southern Africa. He walks 25 kilometers to the river to collect the wood and carries bundles of ebony back on his shoulders to the village. he gave me an appreciation for the hard work that goes into a hand carved piece of art. They get paid next to nothing for it by the time it gets down to the buyer (me!) so I’ll certainly think twice before “bargaining” down too low with the local vendors.
